I see a lot of leather by hand (saddle stitch) and am now looking at a Sphinx singer treadle machine(100.00) and am wondering if it’s a good machine for this purpose

  3. Ana B. says:

That singer heavy duty is crap. I’m really shocked you even included it which then makes me think other ones are probably not good either. Except Sailrite, Techsew and Juki.

  4. Martin Graham Foster says:

I’ve got the Singer 4423 and it’s an awful choice for leather! How did it make the list? Sponsorship? Advertising?

Vertical post and horizontal post style machines are what you need for thick leather. Slow but steady and a good double feed / walking foot. It need not have lots of controls. Simple is better.
